May Island Batik Project – Triangle Tricks!!

Posted on May 16, 2022May 16, 2022 by Jane Hauprich

The Island Batik Ambassadors were assigned the Triangle Tricks Challenge for May 2022.

When I first saw the project, I knew immediately what tool and book I wanted to use. This is a favorite tool of mine and one I have used over and over, especially as it works well with 2 1/2″ strip sets. It is the 90 degree Double-Strip Ruler designed by Rachel Cross and Creative Grids.

And this book is also a favorite of mine!! I love all the patterns in it. It is called Strip-Smart Quilts II by Kathy Brown. All of the quilts in this book go together fairly quickly and all feature using the ruler above.

I had received a beautiful strip set that I knew that I wanted to use for this project. This collection, Jewel Carvings, should be available in stores later in May or sometime in June.

So I got to work getting all of my strip sets sewn together and started cutting them out.

Here is just one of the sets and look how well they go together.

I used this fun fabric for the background sections. This would be a great fabric to have in your stash!! It is called Swirl by Island Batik, which comes in several different colors. I love this one as I am a huge fan of gray and white!!

Next was the chore of squaring up my blocks. I found that my ruler was slipping some, so I tried out this spray on my ruler. It is called Grippy by Odif. OMG…..it was amazing!!! No more slipping!!! And no residue!!

I am always amazed at how my blocks look after I spend time trimming and squaring them up!!

Next, I got all of my blocks up onto the design wall and made sure I was happy the layout. Once I had everything as I liked it, I put all the blocks together.

Now onto the quilting…………….I used Hobbs batting 80/20 Bleached cotton when I quilted this. I quilted this on my Handi Quilter Amara longarm.

I decided that the swirls of the one fabric needed to be carried through, so I free motioned swirls onto this nice lap quilt!!

I used this fabric from my stash, to bind the quilt. It is called Heather by Island Batik.

As I pieced this one and then added the binding, the Schmetz needles were wonderful!!!

And what better thread to use to hand bind this quilt……why Aurifil thread of course!!!

All in all, I am super happy with this quilt. It was a quick quilt to put together and a lot of fun to do!!

And wait til you see what I did with the backing!! I had two extra blocks left over so I decided to use them!!

Again, I am loving how easy this quilt went together. Thank goodness for strip sets!!

Happy Quilting Everyone!!

A special thank you to those that contributed to this project: Island Batik, Aurifil Thread, Hobbs Batting and Schmetz Needles.
