March 2024 Island Batik – It’s All Up To You!!

Posted on March 21, 2024March 20, 2024 by Jane Hauprich

It’s All Up To You is the theme for our March 2024 Island Batik Ambassador project.

I had to think about this, as I had a couple of ideas in mind.

I love to make rope bowls, and have been seeing a technique that I wanted to try. It is the over under method. I thought that this fabric would be great for trying this technique.

Well, this did not go as I thought it would, but I am glad I tried it.

The inside of the bowl turned out great, but let’s just say that the outside isn’t near as nice. Yikes!! I should have thought of a few things prior to cutting my fabric on that last row!! LOL!!! Oh well, lesson learned.

As the weather has been getting warmer on some days, I thought a nice spring colored table runner would be a great choice of something to make!!

I searched through some books I had, to see if I could come up with something fun to do and came up with a block to make a table runner. The book is Perfect 5 Quilts by It’s Sew Emma.

I chose Island Batik Turquoise Solid and O-Gee Petal-Sunshine, along with white background fabric.

This went together fairly quickly. My travel Oliso Iron came in super handy. I keep this smaller Oliso and a wool pressing mat, next to my sewing machine, so that I don’t have to get up if I just need to iron small pieces.

Once I had this all pieced, I decided that I wanted to quilt this on my stationary longarm, which is a Handi Quilter Amara ST.

If you want to see the quilting of this, please head over to my YouTube channel, as I have done a video on quilting this. I do these videos in the hopes that they help others in their free motion quilting journey.

I then chose to do a faux piped binding, which I think turned out really well.

I pieced this on my Janome sewing machine. The Schmetz needles were also part of this process. I had a piece of Hobbs white batting left over from another project, which ended up being perfect for this.

I am loving the way this will look on my table this Spring!!!!

Thanks for joining me on my journey as an Island Batik Ambassador. I appreciate you all!!

Happy Quilting!!

Oh, Jane, I just love both of these projects! You have inspired me to try a rope bowl!!!! And of course, your quilting on the runner is stunning. Your table is all set for spring!

Love them both, Jane! The faux piped binding is great and that little pop of yellow pulls everything together. Thanks for the tutorial. While I have a longarm, I’m always interested in watching other quilters and how they do things in hopes of applying some of the techniques to my longarm quilting! I’m going to have to make a rope bowl one of these days!
