Create For A Cause Quilt for Island Batik

Posted on February 2, 2021February 2, 2021 by Jane Hauprich

So the Island Batik challenge for February was to create a quilt for a cause. What a great idea!!!

The fabric I was assigned to use is new and called Blinded By Science by Jackie Kunkel. What fun fabric, and I wanted to make sure I used every piece in the collection!!

I decided to make a disappearing nine patch with this fabric. This technique is fun as you make a nine patch and cut it down the middle both directions and end up with fun blocks and then a secondary pattern throughout the quilt.

I used my HQ Stitch 510 to stitch this together.

For the border fabric I used this fabulous fabric!! Radioactive is the perfect name for this one!! And of course, I couldn’t do anything without my Oliso iron!!!

  • Radioactive-Sterling

I needed a couple of punches of color for the sashing and binding, so I used a couple of pieces of my coordinating stash bundles to make this quilt pop.

  • Amethyst Solid Batik
  • Fuschia Solid Batik
  • Formulas-Snowcone

I used a computerized quilt design on my Handi Quilter Amara with ProStitcher. The computerized design is called Malachite by Urban Elementz.

I used Hobbs Cotton Batting in this quilt, which was the perfect batting choice!!!

As I was binding, I realized I had received the perfect color thread from Aurifil to do the hand sewing on the back.

And here is the finished quilt!! I’m pretty happy with it!!

So….who is my quilt going to? I am working with Happy Crates Gives.

Here’s a little excerpt about this local family and their foundation……….

“Our family has been in the childhood cancer world for over 10 years with our oldest son Darren, who was diagnosed with cancer when he was just eight weeks old. Through his journey, we’ve learned the immense joy that comes from a smile…….Our goal is to reach every child fighting cancer in a positive way.”

To read more about their journey, please head over to their website to see all that they do. Not only do they spread joy on a regular basis to kids fighting cancer, but they also give part of their sales from their Happy Crates website to childhood cancer research.

What is a Happy Crate????? Every crate is packed with unique and fun gifts that are hand selected. Not only do they have these Happy Crates Boxes that are filled with fun stuff, they also have awesome apparel. You definitely need to jump over to their website and check out all of their products, because they are all AMAZING!!!!!

And the best part.………..A portion of every purchase goes to help childhood cancer research. And on a personal note…..My grandkids have loved getting these Happy Crates boxes!!!!

Announcement!!!!!!!!
After much thought and consideration, we have decided that the best way to raise funds for this organization with this quilt is to have a Quilt Auction!!! Woohoo!!!!
Head on over to my business Facebook page for the auction. And not only are we auctioning this quilt, but we have added a couple of others too!!!. I hope that you will stop over and see the beautiful quilts…..which will each go to the highest bidder!!!

The auction begins today and ends at 10pm (Eastern Time) on February 14, 2021.

Thanks to Island Batik, Hobbs Batting, and Aurifil thread for supplying the products that I used in this project!! Someone will get to love this quilt and that makes my heart happy!!!!

Do you love a great giveaway??? Make sure to watch my Facebook page over the next several weeks as I will be sharing a weekly giveaway from Island Batik!!

Happy Quilting!!

What a fun collection! I love the pinch of solids you added, and a disapperaing 9-patch is a great way to highlight the whole collection. Fun! Good luck the auction!

Nice quilt. Thanks for sharing. It is so helpful and informative. Lucky people – the one who wins the bidding and the people who get the donation money from the auction.
