Island Batik March Challenge with Aurifil!!

Posted on March 2, 2022March 1, 2022 by Jane Hauprich

It’s the Aurifil Color Builder Challenge using the Italian Color Builder Collections!!!!

When we received our package of goodies from Island Batik for 2022, we also received a box of Italy-themed Color Builders thread from Aurifil. I received Sardinia Pink!! This box of Color Builders contains 3 large spools of 50 weight thread in the most gorgeous pinks!!!!

Well, I had no clue what to do, so the first thing I thought of was to Google Sardinia Italy. I found out that Sardinia is known for its pink beaches. Wow…..so beautiful!!! The first thing I did was print a couple of pictures and pin them to my design wall to use as inspiration!! And then I found a couple of landscape quilts that I really liked and pinned pictures of them to the wall. This project was a little intimidating as it is out of the box for me, but I was ready for the challenge!!!

Once I had an idea in mind, I took out all of my scrap fabrics and went to town. I used a lot of my gradation blues from an earlier project in this one!! I started with this in mind.

But decided I needed to make the sky brighter, so I changed things up. I have to say that my Karen Kay Buckley scissors came in very handy for this entire process.

Once I was happy with my design, I did tack the fabric down to a solid background piece with a water soluble glue stick. Then I needed to find the right thread for this entire project.

Now on to my favorite part…..the quilting!!!! I layered this with some Hobbs 80/20 batting and took this to my Handi Quilter Capri and did some thread work!!!

And I am loving the finished product!!!!

Thank you to Hobbs Batting, Island Batik, and Aurifil Thread for the amazing products for making this project!!!

Happy Quilting Everyone!!!

Yowzer! For someone working “outside her box,” you really nailed it! I love the changes you made from “draft” 1 to 2, and I so appreciate your sharing your process with us. You have inspired me to go ahead with a somewhat similar landscape project I have been thinking about—but not starting—for a very long time. Your end product is beautiful.

Thanks for sharing your landscape process. You have given me the courage to attempt the ‘out of the box’ landscape quilt I have been thinking about tackling.
I love the movement in your piece!
