Scrap Busting with Color Blocks

Posted on March 1, 2021February 28, 2021 by Jane Hauprich

So for the Island Batik March project, we were to make a scrappy quilt.

I was thrilled with this project, as I love scrappy quilts!! In fact, I had signed up for Debby Brown’s 2021 Scrap Quilt Along, so I figured this was the way to go!!! This Scrap Quilt Along is so much fun, because you get to make blocks (16 patches) out of 2 1/2″ squares and then a new pattern is released every month. How cool is that!!!!

The other fun thing is that it is free!!!! You just need to sign up, which you can do here.

So first, I gathered all my scraps from my previous two projects and cut them into the right size pieces. Then I started piecing them together. Next was to use Debby’s new ruler to cut the blocks for this pattern. This made it so easy!!

I used my Schmetz needles to piece this quilt and they were wonderful!!!

My wool pressing mat and my Oliso iron sure came in handy for this!!!

I used my Island Batik white fabric for the background and binding.

After I took a picture of the finished top, I decided to doodle on the picture to see what kind of a quilting plan I could come up with.

I then layered this with Hobbs Down batting to give the quilting some loft, and it certainly did work great!!

This was free motion quilted using my Handi Quilter Amara.

I have to say that I am loving the outcome!!!

A special thank you to Island Batik, Schmetz Needles, Hobbs Batting for contributing the supplies for this quilt!!

Make sure you jump over to Debby Brown Quilts to sign up for the year long Scrappy Quilt Along!!! It’s a great way to use up those scraps and end up with some great quilts!!

Happy Quilting!!!

    Beautiful quilt!
I’d love to watch you do those big white blocks. They are so cool! I also doodle on pictures of my quilt to figure out the quilting. I have preview paper but the photos have been working better for me.
