Marvelous Mini Challenge – August 2024 Island Batik Ambassador Project

Posted on August 5, 2024August 3, 2024 by Jane Hauprich

This month is all about Mini Quilts!! I have to say, that I love a good mini quilt and was super excited about this challenge.

My first thought, of course, was what kind of design should I go for. As I was looking through my fabrics, I noticed that I had a lot of fabric left over from my May project, which I was totally in love with. The Island Batik Prisms fabric collection for Designer Claudia Porter has to be one of my current favorites!!!

Not only that, but I had participated in a Prisms Blog Hop for Designer Claudia Porter, and had an extra block left over from that, so that got me to thinking, cause I hate to waste a quilt block!!!

I love pineapple blocks, and the one above was made using the Pineapple Block Tool by Gyleen Fitzgerald. You can read more about that in this post.

I also have this book that I have used multiple times to make some tiny paper pieced pineapple blocks.

The piecing went really well on my Janome sewing machine and using Aurifil Thread and Schmetz needles!!

I ended up with making four of them to help accentuate the larger pineapple block.

Next up, I decided to incorporate some more of the luscious Prisms line into this piece by creating piano key sections to join everything all together. I love how it came out!!

Next up was choosing the backing. I chose this fabric for the backing! It is Dandelion-Wisteria from the Island Batik Blenders.

I used my Sullivan’s Basting spray to sandwich the mini quilt together, along with my Hobbs batting.

I quilted this on my Handi Quilter Amara ST. And of course I made a video to go along with it, so that you can see how I went about doing the quilting!!!

If you would like to see how this was quilted, please click on the youtube link below!!

I decided to bind this with solid black, as I felt it would bring the entire piece together. I used my new binding eaze ironing mat, along with my Oliso Iron, to make the binding and it worked great. I was able to purchase this from Missouri Star Quilt Company. If you like to shop there, please feel to use my link to get 20% off your order of $50 or more.

And here is the finished piece.

I hope that you have enjoyed this mini as much as I have. I already have it displayed in my hallway and it is just so bright and cheery.

Thank you to the companies that provided the items to make this quilt: Island Batik, Aurifil Thread, Hobbs Batting, Oliso Irons and Schmetz needles.

Happy Quilting!!!

I love it! It’s so cute and colorful! Also, I was just looking at that binding eaze tool this morning and wondering how it worked. Thanks for the recommendation. Have a great day!

I love pineapple blocks but have never made one…yet!! I love your little quilt, Jane, and I loved watching you quilt it on your sit-down Amari. I would love to know what sort of camera set up you have. Great quilt, great fabric, great quilting!
