Island Batik – November Project – Storm At Sea Quilt

Posted on November 2, 2021October 25, 2021 by Jane Hauprich

So our November Island Batik challenge was to make a Storm At Sea quilt. I had never done one of these before, but had always been intrigued by them and all the varieties that you can make. I have even quilted a few of these for customers before.

The Island Batik fabric collection that I had been given to use for this project was: Calm Lagoon by Kathy Engle for Sherry Shish of Powered By Quilting. Isn’t this collection amazing!!!! Make sure to read to the end to enter for a Giveaway!!!!

Below are the fabrics I chose from the collection for my project. I also used Marble Aqua from the Blender fabrics, Blueberry from the Brilliant Blues and white from their solids collection.

I decided to use the AccuQuilt Storm at Sea BOB (Block On Board). This allows you to cut out the entire quilt using this one die!! It was fantastic!!!

What makes me love these dies so much is that everything lines up perfectly, when the piecing is happening!!!

I did piece this with my Handi Quilter Stitch 510, which is a workhorse of a machine!!! Schmetz needles were used for the piecing in this project also, and worked wonderfully!!!

I did find some Storm at Sea planning paper on the internet to try to plan out the colorways for this, but I decided I wanted to go with a traditional scrappy Storm at Sea.

This quilt came together so well that I had it done in no time and then had to decide what color borders to use!!!!

In the end, I used the lighter of the two fabrics, and then used the darker for the binding. Once I had this top done, it was time to quilt it on my Handi Quilter Amara with ProStitcher. I used the Raindrops Edge-to-edge pattern on this as I felt like it was appropriate for a Storm at Sea quilt!!!

Hobbs Cotton Batting made this quilt nice and soft!!!

And here are the pictures of the final quilt!!!! I just love everything about this!!!

  • Rosie “approved”
  • Scrappy back for the win!!

I would like to thank those companies that contributed towards this quilt: Island Batik, AccuQuilt, Schmetz Needles, and Hobbs Batting.

I post a lot more on Social Media, so please follow along on Facebook and Instagram!!!

Happy Quilting!!!

Giveaway!!!!!!

I am giving away this 2 1/2″ strip set bundle of the Calm Lagoon collection + extra!! (I used up all of one fabric, so I substituted several more coordinating fabrics)

Two ways to win…..Make a comment on this blog post or head over to my YouTube and subscribe!!
Note: If you do both, you will have two entries in to win!!

Contest will end November 6 at 8pm. Winner will be announced through a blog post!!!

I love the colors in Calm Lagoon!
I have the Storm at Sea BOB and I got a little frustrated trying to cut piece G without waste, since I was using specific colors and had to line up several pieces of fabric. But, trying to cut those pieces with regular rulers would take me months! Love my Accuquilt 😍

I love your Storm at Sea – that quilt pattern is on my list to do before my quilting days are over. I had planned on doing it via paper piecing but may change my mind.

This quilt is so beautiful! I hadn’t really thought about how a “scrappy” version of this pattern would so change the look of the finished quilt, but 🤦‍♀️, of course. I also was glad to hear your review of the Accuquilt die for this design; I have been thinking about purchasing it for a while now, as the pattern is complex and will involve a LOT of cutting. I enjoy reading your posts! Thanks for this one.
