I recently had the pleasure of designing a feather stencil collection for Quilt Pro.
First, have you heard about Quilt Pro? It is an awesome, user-friendly, quilt designing software program, that is a must have in my opinion.
This powerful program has thousands of quilt blocks, fabric swatches, and of course…..stencils. These stencils can be sized to your block, which makes this so awesome for those of us that like to use stencils to quilt, or just like to see how a certain quilting design might look on a quilt block while still in the designing process.
I have had several people ask, “Why would I want a stencil collection and how would I use them?” Well……I decided to write up this blog post to show you how I would use these stencils or any of the stencils within Quilt Pro.
The first thing I did, was to decide what stencil I wanted to use. I thought I would use some from my Designer Collection, to demonstrate. Once I decided which stencil I wanted to use, I printed it out on plain computer paper.
I decided that I would use some of the awesome solid fabrics that I had in my stash from Connecting Threads. Aren’t they beautiful!!!!!
After the design was printed, I decided I would like to have several of these on hand, and didn’t want to print out a lot more, so I used Golden Threads Quilting Paper.
First I cut several pieces of the Quilting paper and attached it to the original stencil by stapling them all together at the top, with the original stencil on top. I then took these to my machine (any machine set to do free motion), and without thread in the needle, I needle punched holes all along the lines of the stencil. And now I have multiple copies of this stencil ready to go!!
Next, I took one of the Golden Threads needle punched pages, and placed it rough side up on the fabric. At this point I took my Quilt Pounce (by Hancy Creations) and slowly moved it across the holes on the paper. By using the rough side up, this catches the chalk from the Quilt Pounce Pad as it is gently moved across the paper and drops it directly onto the fabric. Every time I do this, I am just so tickled that it is so easy!!
Now I lift off the paper and there is my pattern perfectly visible on my fabric. Now I can stitch the lines out by following them. Remember, those lines are just a guideline!! Don’t panic if you don’t stitch exactly on the line!! Those lines will go away and no one will know!! Remember to look ahead of where you are stitching so you know where you are going next. This will help you stay close to the suggested design.
I was using the Iron Off Pounce, so all I had to do was run my iron over the finished piece, and presto……the marks were gone!!
So, as you can see, you can not only use the stencils within QuiltPro to audition different quilting designs, but you can print them out to the size you need and use them as real life stencils.
QuiltPro is an awesome quilt designing software that truly is user-friendly, plus they have some great designer collections already out, with more new ones coming soon!!
If this program interests you, or even purchasing one of the stand alone Designer Collections, please feel free to use this 25% off Discount Code: STITCHBYSTITCH (good til July 1, 2018), at www.quiltpro.com.
Happy Quilting!!!!
Quilt Pro allows you to use layers on your quilt design to audition the quilting stencil before making anything but I can’t get mine to work- it only shows the quilt design but I want to see how it looks on my pieced patchwork layer. Has QP closed down as the website is down.?
Hi! I was unaware that their website closed down. I’m not sure about QP. Sorry!!
