I have had a small bag of vintage/antique linens that I had tucked away in my quilt closet, never really knowing what to do with them, but I couldn’t find it in me to part with them. And thank goodness I never did part with them.
I have seen some pictures lately of vintage linens being used for quilts or quilting them for other objects.
I still wasn’t sure about this, but after finding a Facebook Group that deals specifically with vintage linens, I decided to take the plunge and went ahead and chose one of the linens I had.
I knew I wanted to do a small piece first, so I chose a beautiful antique handkerchief. I loved the way the lace had been done to make the four corners. A friend of mine picked out the background fabric for me really not even knowing what I had to work with, which ended up being perfect.
And here it is completely finished…..
After I was finished quilting this, I showed my Mom. Well, wasn’t I surprised when she told me that this was the handkerchief that she used the day she married my Dad. Friends of her family made that for her for her wedding day!! How cool is that!!! This will be a piece to treasure forever!!
This also meant that I needed to do a label that told this story………….
Happy Quilting!!
Jane, this is absolutely stunning!! It is a real treasure of memories to be passed down.
The piece is gorgeous; the backstory beautiful. And, love the label and the photos!!
The piece is beautiful. I love your Mom’s story. A true treasure.
Well, you have done it yet again! And now knowing the story behind the handkerchief makes it priceless!
Stunning! The story makes it even more special. ❤️
Jane, this is really beautiful. I have a lot of vintage linens here plus a hankie collection. I shall try to make one for you to quilt for me. Thanks for sharing this. Ruthie
This is gorgeous-it is wonderful to see where it started and the finished piece. What a special piece it has turned out to be.
Marlene – thank you so much for your kind words!! This will surely be a piece I treasure.
