Our Island Batik May project is for the Quilt Modern Blog Hop! I have to say, as much as I have tried, I tend to not be a modern quilt maker, but I sure did have a lot of fun making this one!!!!
First, I had these gorgeous fabrics to use!! This is Glacier Bay by Kathy Engle. Aren’t they fabulous!!!!
I also decided to add a couple of other fabrics to this project. The greens were the perfect color for what I was doing. These beautiful fabrics are called “Large Netting-Pineneedle blender” and “Chameleon”. I also used a piece from a stash builder bundle in gold.
I had been thinking about this month’s project for awhile, and had something in mind. The first thing I did was to add Lite Steam-A-Seam2 to the back of the fabric that I wanted to use. I also used Karen Kay Buckley’s Perfect Circles for making circles too. I absolutely love both of these products!!!
Once I hade my fusible stabilizer in place on the fabrics that I wanted to use, I used a an orange peel (4 1/2″) quilt die that I had purchased awhile ago from Accuquilt, to cut out all of the orange peel shapes I needed.
Next I took a 42″ x 42″ square of white batik fabric and laid everything out and played around with it until I had it just the way I wanted it. Here it is during that process.
Once I had everything exactly where I wanted, I ironed them down.
The next step would normally be to applique these shapes down. But I decided, I would take care of the applique and quilting all at the same time…..right on my longarm!!!! I used my Handi Quilter Amara to free motion this project!!
First step was to secure all of those pieces down. Since this is going to be a wall hanging, I just did a straight stitch around the outer edge of all of the pieces that were fused down.
After that, I had the great idea of doing an echo around all of those pieces in a contrasting thread. I chose blue, as I thought that would look the best with this piece.
I decided to use double batting on this piece, as I wanted the quilting to really pop, plus I wanted this to hang nicely on the wall. I decided to use Hobbs cotton on the bottom and Poly-Down on top.
After I had the pieces secured down, I went about free motion quilting the background. I quilted in some faux leaves and flowers too!!
Once I was done with that, I decided that those applique pieces needed some quilting too.
I decided to do a faced binding on this, as I thought that would show off the piece the best. The faced binding was done on my domestic machine using Schmetz needles and Aurifil thread!!
Here is what a faced binding looks like on the back.
I am pretty pleased with this piece and can’t wait to hang it up!!! Here are several pictures of the finished project!!
I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing this as much as I did making it!!!
I want to thank the following companies for their wonderful products that were given to me to use for making these projects: Island Batik, Schmetz Needles, Aurifil Thread and Hobbs Batting.
But wait……there’s more!!!! Don’t forget to check out all the other Island Batik projects during this Blog Hop!! I’ve seen a few already, and let me tell you…..you don’t want to miss seeing any of them!!!

This quilt is stunning!!!! I love the way you used the Orange Peel die to cut out the flower petals and the quilting is so yummy. Have a fabulous day!
Very pretty flower quilt, love the puff.
I learn so much on these blog hops. As a fairly new machine quilter–or at least, a hesitant machine quilter who is progressing slowly–I really appreciated you taking the time to spell out that you used two layers of batting and why. I have been making a lot of mini quilts, because they are manageable as I practice my quilting, and I will now add another layer so that my results are even more pleasing. Thanks!
Jane, as usual I always love your projects and I have enjoyed all the projects of the others who have knocked our socks off with their beauties!
